The U.S. Department of State (DOS) Office of Acquisition Management intends to issue a Sole Source Award to SIGARMS Inc. Exeter, NH for the purchase of 300 Sig Sauer P229 Pistols and 600 P228/P229 13rd Magazines. SIGARMS is the sole manufacturer of the aforementioned items. The Sig Sauer P229 9mm pistol is a unique system that our armorers have been certified to repair and DS agents have been trained to use which presents a legal liability issue. The U.S. Department of State cannot utilize multiple systems for our weapons for the above reasons. The DS Firearms Policy and Review Board has approved the use of the Sig Sauer as the ONLY pistol authorized for use by DS agents. The economic impact to the U.S. Government for using other items that what is requested, would be great and would involve the re-training of all agents in the field including purchasing all new weapons systems to issue to the various mission locations overseas and domestic.
