The U.S. Army Armament research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Picatinny, NJ, has a requirement to use .50 Caliber M82A1 Sniper Rifles to disable or destroy thin cased equipment. The general dimension of equipment to be engaged is approximately four to six inches in length and two to four inches in width and height. In addition, it is desired that the cartridge also be capable of the breaching of a thin wall (1/4" to 1/2"0 of non-reinforced concrete/plaster. The range at which these targets are to be disabled or destroyed is approximately 300 meters. The desired effect would be equivalent to ball ammunition. The use of current .50 Caliber combat ammunition for this task poses a severe ricochet hazard to personnel and material in close proximity to target. ARDEC is interested in procuring and testing a frangible .50 caliber cartridge that will reduce/minimize this ricochet hazard. At the desired ranges the cal 50 projectile shall be capable of effectively disabling or destroying the equipment, however the projectile shall be designed such that it will break apart upon impact with the ground or other hard surface to reduce ricochet hazard and minimize collateral damage to civilian personnel, friendly troops, buildings or material.
