The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to determine the availability of qualified businesses capable of providing a portable gas flux meter to conduct surveys over rugged volcanic terrain as described in the required features and specifications below. This sources sought announcement is not a request for quote or proposal and the Government is not committed to award of a purchase order or contract pursuant to this announcement. The information resulting from this market research is simply for planning purposes to assist the Government in determining its acquisition strategy. The Government will not pay for any costs incurred in the preparation of information for responding to this notice.

Required features and specifications for portable gas flux meter

- Portable instrument for measurement of CO2 fluxes (with optional H2S and CH4 fluxes) based on the accumulation chamber method.
- Palmtop computer with integrated GPS, touchscreen, wireless communication with flux meter (via Bluetooth).
- CO2 flux measurement range: 2-150,000 millimole CO2/m2 d.
- CO2 flux accuracy: +/- 25%.
- Rapid measurement (within 3 minutes).
- >/= 8-hour operational time.
- Accumulation chamber with 200 mm diameter, 150 mm height, 1.5 kg weight, and integrated air temperature and pressure sensors.
- Accumulation chamber functions without soil collar, allowing for flux measurement in steep volcanic terrain.
- Option for measuring CO2 fluxes from water surfaces using floating chamber ring.
- Integrated software for real-time data collection and in-situ flux calculation.
