Testing biological specimens for prescription, over the counter (OTC) and illicit drugs is the main function of the DFT and requires the use of drug reference standards. Supplied as 1ml ampoules, the drug reference standards are used as neat solutions in the preparation of calibrators, standards and/or control materials. The reference standards are generally spiked into biological matrices, chemically extracted and assayed by gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS), liquid chromatrography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) as well as High Performance Liquid Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (HPLC/MS). These drug reference standards are used to verify retention time for compounds of interest and verify the accuracy and precision of the testing methods.
