HD VIDEO CAMERA/LENS/RECORDING SYSTEM Background: The Digital Betacam and DVCAM production cameras used for studio and field production are standard definition only recording to videotape we need to replace our obsolete SD systems with HD equipment as our existing systems are no longer supported by the manufacturer. Our only HD camera system the F350 is an ENG (Electronic News Gathering) camera that records HD onto 23GB XDCAM optical disks. The camera system is suitable for event production and documentation but is limited as a documentary digital cinema camera system by its ½" CCD imaging system and the inability to use prime lenses and the inherent record limitations of the 23GB XDCAM optical disk system recording 4:2:0 which is not suitable for green screen compositing in a live studio environment with the Ultimatte or post production on the Avid editing system. The production needs of long form documentary and education products that require the use of green screen recording or live studio compositing that necessitate a camera system that can output a 4:4:4 uncompressed HD signal into the Ultimate 11 HD compositing system. As EES evolves its production capabilities to support educational media products we are adopting digital cinema production techniques using a new generation of camera, lenses and recording systems based on the 35mm CMOS imager which provides increased dynamic range, uncompressed 4:4:4 HD output and can use industry standard PL mount cinema optics that can be used on any PL mount camera system. The SSD video recording modules will replace the use of video tape acquisition and the field recording systems can support ProRes 4:2:2 and the Avid DNxHD codec. The field HD recorder does not support encryption and cannot be connected to any VA networked devices and is only used to support the recording of HD video as the common industry standard recording media. The purpose of this replacement equipment is to support HD studio compositing, location field production either in tandem with the existing F350 in the VACO studio and Crystal City Conference Center to include green screen post production compositing, conference recording. The camera system specified is configured to support a digital cinema workflow more common in documentary production and is a departure from the ENG television news style of production that is typical for public affairs. Our investment into the optics that will support the specified camera system and any future PL mount camera which will over time save money by eliminating the need to continuously replace the optics with every new camera system.
