First published Tuesday, August 12, 2014 The University awarded a contract for Abiomed Inc.'s Impella Pump to Abiomed Inc., Danver, MA, for an estimated $250,000. The Impella pump is the only percutaneously inserted circulatory support device that can unload the left ventricle without having to puncture the atrium. It only requires one vessel access. It has the ability to pump blood directly from the left ventricle to the ascending aorta without having any part of the circulation circuit outside of the body. The product is also approved by the FDA (reference # K063723) in May 2009. The IMPELLA® Pump known as an Percutaneous Cardiac Support System is intended for partial circulatory support using an extracorporeal bypass control unit. for periods up to 6 hours. It is also intended to be used to provide partial circulatory support (for periods up to 6 hours) during procedures not requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. The IMPELLA ® Pump also provides pressure measurements which are useful in determining intravascular pressure. It is intended for partial circulatory support using an extracorporeal bypass control unit. for periods up to 6 hours. It is also intended to be used to provide partial circulatory support (for periods up to 6 hours) during procedures not requiring cardiopulmonary bypass.
