The Bureau of Prisons seeks to obtain accreditation and subsequent reaccreditation for its' institutions. The initial accreditation process includes conducting audits at specified facilities to determine compliance with the applicable standards agreed to by the Bureau.

Reaccreditation of federal facilities previously accredited shall be accomplished by the Intensive Reaccreditation Process (IRP), which is the observation and review of one or more agency reviews (Program Reviews) by contract representatives to ensure continued substantial compliance with the applicable standards for that institution.

Standards to be included in agency policy and Program Review Guidelines include current editions of Adult Correctional Institutions; Adult Local Detention Facilities; the Standards for the Administration of Correctional Agenices; Standards for Correctional Training Academies; and applicable Standards Supplements.
