** This solicitation is hereby modified to extend the due date for proposals to 3:00 EDT, January 28, 2008. This is a combined synopsis/solicitation for commercial items prepared in accordance with FAR Subpart 12.6, as supplemented with additional information included in this notice. This announcement constitutes the only solicitation; proposals are being requested and a written solicitation will not be issued. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) primary mission is to provide timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. NASS? primary function is to administer USDA?s Statistical Estimating Program, conduct the five year Census of Agriculture, coordinate Federal/State agricultural statistical needs, perform statistical consulting services for external customers and to conduct statistical research. The Spatial Analysis Research Section (SARS) of NASS? Research and Development Division annually produces remote sensing based acreage estimates at the state and county level for major commodities grown in the United States. The remote sensing based estimates are considered as an unbiased and independent input into the official NASS Crop Report. SARS produces these estimates by creating an agricultural specific land use classification called the Cropland Data Layer (CDL) using satellite imagery that is released into the public domain after the growing season is complete. SARS produces the CDL supervised classification using ground truth collected from farmer reported data and ancillary datasets relating to land use/land cover in the program.
