The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), plans to procure on a sole source basis, services regarding: Salivary nitrosoproline in China, with the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68198-6805. The supplies and services herein are being procured in accordance with the simplified acquisition procedures authorized by FAR Part 13. The North American Industry Classification System code is 541710 and the business size standard is 500 employees. Esophageal cancer is one of the leading causes of death in many countries around the world. The NCI Nutritional Epidemiology Branch (NEB) conducts intramural research in the areas of nutrition and cancer, genetics and cancer, and cancer prevention. The NEB NCI is currently examining the hypothesis that salivary nitrosamine formation is associated with increased risk of esophageal cancer and that poor oral health increases the formation of nitrosamines in the saliva. Individual propensity to form nitrosamines will be assessed using a nitrosoproline phenotyping test. The purpose of this procurement is to obtain data on salivary nitrosoproline formation. This data will aid the NEB in the examination of a cross-sectional study of esophageal cancer in Linxian, China. The University of Nebraska shall determine Nitrosproline and N-nitrososarcosine concentration in 185 saliva samples from Linxian, China. The type of assay NCI requires is used in experimental studies only and is not used in any clinical setting. Therefore, only academic research labs can provide this specific work. The University of Nebraska Medical Center is the only source known in the United States that is currently running this assay, has the expertise, and has studied in vivo nitrosamine formation.
