The title of this program is "Surveillance for Incident Cases of Asthma: Implementing Population-based Models in Health Plans and Managed-care Organizations.ââ¬ï¿½ This program addresses the "Healthy People 2010" focus area(s) Maternal, Infant, and Child Health, and Respiratory Diseases. The purpose of the program is to establish population-based surveillance for incident cases of asthma using data routinely collected by health plans. This data will be used to supplement the surveillance of asthma by State health departments and CDC and could eventually be part of a national network. Incident asthma surveillance sites will be population-based centers designed to assess the public health impact of asthma, to determine the incidence of asthma and to identify population-based risk factors associated with the onset of asthma. This program is designed to foster development of a physician-based reporting system, specifically, a system for the surveillance of incident cases of asthma utilizing health management plans. These model surveillance systems will help to identify incident cases of asthma to determine trends in the incidence and epidemiology of asthma.
