First published Monday, April 25, 2016 The University awarded a contract for Breast Implants from Allergan Sales to Allergan Sales, Incorporated, Irvine, CA, for an estimated $380,000. Purchase from Allergan Sales, Inc. their breast implants and ancillary products for cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Allergan's implantable tissue expansion devices and breast implants are selected by surgeon choice in conjunction with patient clinical evaluation. They have unique patented features and specifications. Consequently, the diagnosis and evaluation results in the conclusion that only Allergan product can fulfill the surgeon and patient needs. Only Allergan's implantable tissue expansion devices and breast implants incorporate an external surface layer of silicone elastomer, at least a portion of which contains a texture or open cell structure. The patented surface technology of the tissue expanders coupled with the highly cohesive silicone matrix of the breast implants are expected to decrease subsequent capsular contracture and help to maintain proper breast implant positioning. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
