BACKGROUND
In an attempt to increase patient satisfaction and improve the patient experience at Naval Medical Center San Diego and to ensure high quality health care we would like to consider systems that allow patients who have temporarily lost their ability to speak due to intubation, tracheotomy, stoke, surgery or other causes to be able to fully communicate with their doctors, nurses, caregivers, family and friends.

Patients in our ICU cannot always easily communicate with staff and family using existing systems. We would like to see what systems are available to help increase communication and possibly improve the patient experience for these temporarily intubated patients.

Statement of Need
We need a system to help temporarily intubated patients communicate with staff and family and that is in compliance with all current hospital policies and security requirements.
