The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intends to award sole source firm fixed price purchase order of DAWN HELEOS II Dual-function light scattering detector to Wyatt Technology Corporation (Goleta, CA). This equipment is capable of simultaneous multi angle light scattering (MALS) detection and dynamic light scattering (DLS) detection within a single flow cell. These two types of detection allow for the measurement of two separate particle size parameters, hydrodynamic size (DLS) and mass weighted average size (MALS). The measurement of both of these parameters in a single flow allows for the determination of molecular shape and hydrodynamic size at the same time. This data will be measured for lipoproteins and other particles present in serum samples ran using a validated lipids method. The date on both size and shape are needed because it is used in quantitative calculations done during our date processing. Additionally lipoprotein size and shape are important biological parameters as they effect the function of these particles in the body. They Wyatt detector also has a flow through observations cell with a small volume (~70 microliter), and an axial flow cell design that minimizes the effect of mixing inside the flow path.
