For the North Slope campaign, the NOAA Twin Otter aircraft will be equipped with a Picarro Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer to measure CO2, CH4, and CO, and an Aerodyne Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) to measure ethane (C2H6). The C2H6 measurements from the QCL are essential to investigate CH4 source attribution because C2H6 is co-emitted with thermogenic CH4 (i.e. from oil and gas sources), but does not have a biogenic source (i.e. from anaerobic microbes). The Aerodyne QCL is the only available instrument capable of making C2H6 measurements with adequate precision to investigate CH4 source attribution at ambient levels, and with a design that is appropriate for airborne measurement platforms.
