The purpose of the FEI 12 Bio-Twin Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is to allow NIEHS/NTP investigators the opportunity to utilize very thin (0.5 um or less) samples of tissues, illuminated by an electron beam, for the detection of changes and/or additions of cellular components not visible by light microscopy. The TEM is used to both confirm and corroborate findings by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry as well as by other research techniques such as DNA assays. This system is used for detecting viruses and small nanoparticles, as well as detecting cellular changes associated with human diseases being researched in clinical trials and/or various investigations here at NIEHS/NTP.
Currently, the Tecnai 12 Bio-Twin system utilizes Microsoft Windows 2000 as its operating system. It is imperative that the Tecnai's software and hardware is upgraded with Tecnai Software 3.x Upgrade Package 10 and Software Package 4.x, which will include the Micorsoft XP Operating system and an Aragon microscope PC. This software and hardware allows connection to ThermoFishers Scientific's (FEI) Rapid FEI for diagnosing on the Tecnia T12 from their headquarters, resulting in less downtime when system issues occur. The upgraded Aragon microscope PC will have direct digital communications with the Tecnai T12, rather than having to go through an analog/digital converter.
In addition, this upgrade will include replacing two hand panels that will allow the microscope to operate more effectively.
