The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Program Support Center (PSC), on behalf of Administration for Community Living (ACL), needs to sponsor the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on aging, disability, and independence. The sponsorship allows ACL to influence the content of the scientific meetings and further meet its mission of maximizing the independence, well-being, and health of older adults, people with disabilities across the lifespan, and their families and caregivers so that all people, regardless of age and disability, live with dignity, make their own choices, and participate fully in society.
IOM was chartered in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), under the terms of the 1863 Congressional charter. One central purpose of the NAS and IOM is to advise the government on issues of science, medicine, and technology. The Academy and its affiliated organization are private, independent, nonprofit institutions that serve as congressionally chartered advisers to the government.
The IOM Forum on Aging, Disability, and Independence serves as a neutral venue through which decision makers in the government, the marketplace, and the community can come together in the battle to prevent or reduce disabling conditions and environments and to enhance long-term services and supports for older adults and individuals with disabilities. The Forum identifies and examines challenges; explores new approaches for resolving problem areas; elevates the visibility of key issues that require additional attention; scrutinizes important and potentially controversial scientific and policy issues; and sets the stage for policy actions.
