This is a notice of intent to increase the ceiling of Contract N66001-15-C-4016 with Nerves Inc., awarded by SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) on behalf of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) on 25 January 2015. The current performance period is eighteen (18) months. Under this contract, Nerves Inc. provides research toward DARPAs Hand Proprioception & Touch Interfaces (HAPTIX) program, which seeks to develop new science and technology to achieve closed-loop control of dexterous mechatronic prostheses that will provide amputees with prosthetic limb systems that feel and function like natural limbs. The research focuses on development of implantable peripheral interfaces for volitional motor recording and sensory feedback signals; implantable electronic systems to transfer information between these interface(s) and the prosthesis; and sophisticated encoding and decoding algorithms to transform recorded volitional motor control signals into limb movements and patterned stimulation into naturalistic touch and proprioceptive sensations. The NAICS code for this procurement is 541711. Due to the nature of Research and Development efforts, DARPA could not have reasonably estimated the early results of the efforts from this contract, which has seen breakthroughs that will benefit from continued development. This action includes a ceiling increase of approximately $400k. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals or quotes and will be posted for 15 days. A determination by the Government not to compete based upon response to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government.
