BSI Constructors is the Construction Manager for the expansion and renovation of Powell Hall for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO). SLSO is regarded as one of the finest symphony orchestras in the world, and Powell Hall is considered by many to be a world-class facility for orchestra performances. Additionally, Powell Hall, which was built in 1925, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The $100+ million project includes a new 65,000 SF building addition which will include lobbies, audience services, an Education and Learning Center (performance/multi-function space), musician practice rooms, dressing rooms, and a new central heating and cooling plant. The new building addition will be both structural concrete and steel-framed, and will feature complex exterior and interior geometry and many unique details throughout the building. The building façade will be primarily masonry and curtainwall with metal panel accents. The project also includes significant renovation to portions of the existing facility’s performance hall, public spaces, offices, and back-of-house areas. Acoustics are a major consideration throughout both the new and existing buildings, and a fundamental principle of the project is to both preserve and enhance the acoustic performance of the existing performance hall.
