First published Monday, May 11, 2015 The University awarded a contract for Stryker's Sonopet Ultrasonic Aspirator to Stryker Inc., Kalamazoo, MI, for an estimated $219,900. Purchase from Stryker Inc their Sonopet Ultrasonic as it's the surgeons choice for surgical removal of brain tumors, spinal lesions, livers for disease and transplant, fine bone dissection, and ultrasonic bone cutting. This is the state of the art product. Stryker's patented technology, combined with precise control and an ergonomically designed handpiece, make it possible to emulsify bone with no grabbing or kicking due to non-rotational reciprocating motion, which is common amongst conventional technology. The ergonimically designed handlpiece has a piezo system which makes the handpiece lightweight and efficient. In addition, the Sonopet does not require a water cooling system and is very easy for the nurses to set up. The Sonopet has "Sonic knive" tips (U.S. patent 7,998,157) that allow for ultrasonic bone cutting and bone sawing near critical structures in compressed spinal applications. Reduced kerf preserves patient anatomy while maintaining dura. U.S. patent 7,374,552 unique specification is a Longitudinal torsional (LT) technology that allows surgeon to sculpt bone via non-rotational cutting tips that preserve adjacent critical structures such as nerves and blood vessels in confined neuro cavities. U.S. patent 6,984,220 unqiue specification is a Transsphenoidal applications include extended length tips that allow both access to and removal of pituitary brain tumors via the existing sinus passage versus opening the head and retracting the brain.
