First published Monday, April 22, 2013 The University awarded a contract for the Vaser Lipo System to Sound Surgical Technologies, Lafayette, CO, for an estimated $111,500. The Vaser Lipo system has ultra-sound assist, a critical function that enhances efficiency in removal of fat and fibrous tissue while reducing procedure time in the operating room. Fat injection, an increasingly commonly requested procedure, can be performed with Vaser Lipo System but not with the current system used in the OR. Collectively failure to fund the Vaser Lipo System will increase procedure time and associated costs in the operating room, decreased efficiency and associated patient outcomes related to the use of the equipment that is beyond its operational life. Sound Surgical Technologies is the only company in the world that manufactures the Vaser Lipo System. The uniqueness of the system is protected under United States Patent Number 6,027,515. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
