First published Thursday, November 12, 2015 The University awarded a contract for Tissue expanders and breast implants to Mentor Worldwide LLC., Santa Barbara, CA, for an estimated $735,000. Purchase from Mentor Worldwide LLC.their U.S. patented tissue expanders (used for reconstructive surgeries) and breast implant products. The Mentor Breast Implant (US Patent Number 7,867,061;8,419,507) has a proprietary textured surface. This type of feature is to combat the formation of scar tissue when a breast implant is implanted. A capsule of scar tissue can form around an implant after it is placed in the body. This is a natural reaction of the body to protect itself from the introduction of a foreign object. The formation of this scar capsule is referred to as capsular contracture. Capsular contracture that may result after breast augmentation surgery can result in hardening of the breasts, which may be painful and can require additional surgery. Textured implants can reduce the chance of capsular contracture. The textured surface of the Mentor breast implants (US Patent Number 7,867,061) can promote tissue adherence to the implant, decreasing the amount of scar tissue that grows. In addition, tissue adherence to an implant can help maintain proper implant positioning and prevent movement of the implant within the breast. Mentor?s CPX4 Tissue Expander (US Patent Number 8,821,574) has a proprietary features such as the injection dome magnet is 48% stronger* and makes it easier to find the injection dome under the patient?s skin such. Another added feature is BufferZone, Self?Sealing Patch. The Mentor?s BufferZone Patch (Tissue Expander US Patent Number 8,821,574) surrounds the integral injection dome to protect at least 50% more of the expander surface area (than the injection dome alone) from accidental needle puncture to minimize and/or prevent device leakage and the need for additional surgery. In additon, to provide Tissue Expander (US Patent Number 8,821,574) with elasticity and integrity, the shells are made with successive cross-linked layers of silicone elastomer. The Mentor® CPX4 (US Patent Number 8,821,574) with Suture Tabs allows the surgeons the option to attach the device to surrounding tissue to enhance device stability. Surgeons can suture on any part of the tab surface or the suturing hole can be used for added benefit.
