The office of NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) located in Seattle, WA requires a contractor to undertake laboratory toxification experiments to determine the relative capacity for toxin accumulation under controlled conditions of selected bivalve species and the effects of toxins on survival, perform the in vitro nerve assays and in vivo burrowing assays required to characterize individual toxin sensitivity of these species to saxitoxin and provide the material (nerve/ganglia) for molecular work (sequencing of the Na+ channel gene) conducted at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Washington, and collaborate in a study of soluble toxin-binding proteins in butter clams and surfclams, two bivalves that are characterized by prolonged retention of PSP toxins.
