The United States Marine Corps (USMC) funded a research effort to gain a better scientific and technical understanding of the Small Arms Protective Insert (SAPI) plate component materials, integrated plate performance and component interaction effects to relevant military threats. The outcome of this research is a better understanding of design trade spaces and paths to SAPI plate optimization. The design of experiments accounted for ceramic type, crack arrestor metal, ceramic/metal adhesive, and metal/polymer adhesive. The SAPI configurations were challenged with multiple ballistic threats to aid in understanding performance.

Marine Corps Systems Command believes that sharing the technical information produced during this research will benefit both industry and the Department of Defense. Therefore, the USMC is hosting an industry day to share the lessons learned from this evaluation. Members of the research team will present findings followed by an open question and answer session. A technical report will also be made available to attendees.
