This is a Sources Sought synopsis.  This synopsis neither constitutes a Request for Proposal, nor does it restrict the Government from and ultimate acquisition approach.  This synopsis should not be construed as a commitment by the Government for any purpose.  All information is to be submitted at no cost or obligation to the Government.   The US Government reserves the right to reject, in whole or in part, any input as a result of this market survey.    The US Government is not obligated to notify respondents of the results of this survey.  If a formal solicitation is generated at a later date, a solicitation notice will be published.   No award will be made as a result of this market survey.

UNICOR Federal Prison Industries, Allenwood , PA  is seeking potential sources, products and pricing for  wood veneer to be used in the production of desk and table tops for Executive Office Furniture.    The purpose of this Sources Sought synopsis is to find any products available that would produce a better quality finished product.  The reference number for this Sources Sought synopsis is FN1331-11.

Product must meet the minimum specifications:

4' x 8' Grade A Cherry or Maple plain and rotary veneer with any backer or without backer. 

The current process for production and finishing this material is as follows:

•1.       Veneer is cut to size.

•2.       Material is cold pressed to an internally hardwood edgebanded substrate using a water based adhesive.  At this point the material is considered a desk or table  "top".

•3.       "Top" is then profiled with a double end tenoner.

•4.       "Top" is then sanded with a Heeseman belt sander.

•5.       Putty is then applied to and defects.  The  "top"  and is hand sanded using a random orbital sander.

•6.       A water based stain is then applied by "flooding" the "top" and wiping it.

•7.       Two coats of water based sealer is applied and oven dried.

•8.       Followed by applying two coats of water based lacquer and oven dried.

•9.       IR heat to 160 degrees F is used.

Samples are being requested so testing can be conducted in our production process.  ALL SAMPLES PROVIDED MUST CONTAIN DESCRIPTIVE LITERATURE AS TO THE THICKNESS OF VENEER, SPECIES OF VENEER, BACKER MATERIAL USED AND THICKNESS OF THIS BACKER MATERIAL, AND ANY OTHER NECESSARY INFORMATION, AS WELL AS ANY ENVIORNMENTAL INFORMATION .    All interested sources shall provide a summary of their company's capabilities including organizations name, address, phone number, Point of contact name and email address, fax number,  DUNS Number and business size as well as product price.

Two samples and requested information shall be supplied to UNICOR by 10:00 AM EST Tuesday April 26, 2011.  If a company has numerous options that they feel may provide UNICOR  suitable options, They may submit more than one set of samples for review and testing.   Samples and descriptive literature, and other required information shall be sent to the following address:
