The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), conducting research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of neurological disorders and stroke. The NINDS mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease. .
The Human Motor Control Section (HMCS) has a need for the necessary recording equipment to carry out research studies on normal volunteers and patients with neuromuscular disorders. The requested equipment is an Electromyography (EMG) and Evoked Potentials (EP) machine that will be used in many of our studies, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Reflex studies, and Tremor studies. The specific function of this machine is to record electrophysiological signals from the patients via electrodes, force transducers and accelerometers and store them as data files, tables of results, video files, and reports, to be analyzed either online or offline or both.
We have ongoing studies under our thematic protocol (10-N-0009) using this machine and we have written additional software that works with it. We have patient and research data stored under the Viking format.
