The Forest Service requests proposals for the Vulcan Stewardship Contract Area located on the Republic Ranger District of the Colville National Forest, near Republic, Washington in Ferry County. This project involves timber removal, thinning, whip falling, machine piling, hand piling, noxious weed spraying, road constructing and maintenance. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, equipment, supervision, transportation, and supplies to perform all work ordered over a three year period. Restoration objectives for the project area are summarized as follows: 1. To reduce the threat of severe wildfire within the Area using a combination of mechanical and hand thinning methods; 2. Utilize Timber Resources- Provide wood biomass to forest product industry; 3. Improve Road Management- Provide re-construction and maintenance to meet project area transportation plan and resource needs; and 4. Protect forest resources from excessive damage from off road vehicles. To accomplish these objectives, the contract includes the following components: 450,000 tons (estimated) of Mechanical thinning and removal of commercial sized trees, 2,500 tons (estimated) grinding and removal of slash generated by removal (logging) accessible from either the unit or the landings, hand thinning of pre-commercial sized trees, and 295 acres hand and machine piling of slash created by operations, 77 acres of roadside noxious weed spraying, and 10 miles of road reconstruction.
