First published Monday, February 23, 2015 The University awarded a contract for Becton, Dickinson's (BD) FACSCanto II instrument. to Becton, Dickinson & Co (BD), Franklin Lakes, NJ, for an estimated $140,000. Purchase the Becton, Dickinson's (BD) FACSCanto II instrument. The FACSCanto II is the only digital 6 color IVD cleared platform capable of running the IVD cleared Stem Cell Enumeration kit. The FACSCanto II is also the only instrument that can be field upgraded to an 8 color system and maintain the IVD clearance for the Stem Cell Enumeration assay that is required for Stem Cell Transplant Labs.Having additional “colors” allows you to evaluate the patient using less sample. In Stem Cell Enumeration for bone marrow transplant, it’s important to use as little patient sample as possible so that the majority of the cells can be used for the bone marrow transplant following chemotherapy. Future testing of other cell populations (Mesenchymal stem cells, for example) is supported with this technology. BD's Trucount technology allows for single platform absolute counts (all information from one instrument—no need for hematology counts to determine total cell numbers) and is considered the gold standard. No other platform provides the lyophilized counting beads which eliminates pipetting errors and provides for a more accurate result. Absolute counts refers to the number of cells per volume of sample. When evaluating apheresis products, it is imperative to accurately quantify the number of cells as this determines if there is a sufficient number of stem cells to rescue the patient after ablative chemotherapy. Prior to putting a patient on apheresis to harvest mobilized stem cells, it is also necessary to evaluate if they have a sufficient number of these cells to warrant the procedure. The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
